“Let Him Go” is a novel by Larry Watson, but it’s also a 2020 film directed by T. Bezucha, based on the book. The story revolves around a family in Montana in the 1960s and addresses issues of loss, family and justice.
CHARACTERS:
- M. Blackledge: George’s wife, who is deeply distressed by the loss of their son and the resulting family tensions.
- G. Blackledge: The male protagonist, a rancher who fights to protect his family and faces the consequences of a traumatic event.
- Lorna Weboy: Former wife of the deceased Blackledge son, she is a strong and determined woman who is also the mother of baby Jimmy.
- Blanche Weboy: is the mother of the Weboys, who represents a matriarchal figure with an unsettling presence. He is in conflict with the Blackledges for his nephew.
- Donnie Weboy: is the son of Blanche, easily influenced and often seeking approval. Lorna’s husband, is a violent character towards her and those of the son acquired.
- Little Jimmy: The Blackledge’s grandson, who becomes a symbol of hope and direction that the family tries to keep.
PLOT!
Let Him Go is a family drama that follows the story of George and Margaret Blackledge, an elderly couple who, after the death of their only child, try to protect their daughter-in-law and grandson from a toxic family. When their daughter-in-law decides to move away with the baby, George and Margaret embark on a journey to find them and bring them back home. Their search leads them to confront the dark secrets and violent dynamics of the boy’s new family, putting their love and determination to the test. The film explores themes of loss, resilience and family bonding.
PERSONAL OPINION:
The film skillfully blends elements of a western with a drama centered around family and loss. We really like the pacing and the way it builds tension as the characters navigate a morally complex situation.
The film talks about the lengths to which parents and grandparents will go to protect their children, highlighting themes of love, grief, and determination.
The cinematography captures the stark beauty of the American landscape, which shows the emotions of the characters. While some viewers may find the pacing slow at times, the film’s atmospheric tension and character depth make for a compelling viewing experience. Overall, “Let Him Go” stands out as a poignant and intense narrative about familial bonds and the fight against adversity. Women and children are sometimes victims of physical abuse, though they try to defend their rights in the best way possible.
